The main purpose of a music video is ultimately, to sell the song by the band or artist being shown in the video. Or to market objects seen in the video, a soundtrack for an upcoming movie, to sell a bands merchandise, for example, t-shirts.
Different bands, and artists will do this in many different ways with many different messages put into their videos, some artist will have little or no input into the making or designs of their videos. A good example of an artist using there music video to showcase to the audience the feel, of an upcoming album, along with genre and possibly the underlying message in the video. For example, an artist called Plan B has used this brilliant with his new single "ill manors" being released ahead of his forthcoming album and movie.
In this video we see brilliant marketing via this showcase, for his upcoming movie called "ill manors". This being released early and making its way up through the charts made his target audience completely aware of his upcoming movie and really sparking interest for it. Not just for the movie, but for what the movie will be about, another thing showcased in this video using lyrics such as "Were just bloody broke in Britain". Using the video up-loader "YouTube" also helped exposure across the internet, with the video amassing over three million views.
Another great example of a company advertising a product by using a music video, is the song "Greyhound" by the Swedish House Mafia. There Music video has been used to advertise the product "Absolut Vodka" by it featuring twice in there video and shown it being drunk aswell.
As you can see they have put there product in this video, to increase popularity by putting it in a popular video which over 10 million people have viewed, therefore increasing there exposure. Also the nature of the video dictates and suggest that it is something cool to drink, and also suggesting it is refreshing as the setting of the video is in a baron desert. And finally using the gathering of people to suggest to the audience that this is a social drink.
